Macedonian Monument Project at the U.S. Naval Academy: Cannons Installed

Aeon has completed the restoration of the Macedonian Monument for the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. This year-long project has involved a wide range of services from laser scanning and non-destructive evaluation, concrete restoration and the conservation of bronze plaques, to replication of the original figurehead in mahogany and treatment of the four 18th century cannon. The cannons have just finished a five month process of paint removal and electrolytic reduction to remove all traces of chlorides from deep within the cast iron. The final steps included a phosphoric acid treatment to stabilize the surface prior to painting. Following treatment many details emerged from the old corroded surface that were never visible before. The rededication of this War of 1812 monument is scheduled for April 25.
